Thanks! Doug ------------------- Graduate Research Assistantship UMIACS Computational Linguistics and Information Processing Laboratory August 28, 2008 I'm looking for a Ph.D. student to work with on an NSF project in which we are applying computational linguistics techniques to create new capabilities for scalable "content analysis" research in the social sciences. We'll work closely with social scientists on a broad range of problems and genre. Our piece of the puzzle is to design and evaluate new text analytics techniques that can support specific types of analysis (e.g., lagged correlation in amount or diversity of discussion of specific technologies, analysis of influence propagation in social networks identified from evidence in large text collections to identify opinion leaders, or jointly clustering topics and the people who write about those topics). We're also in the process of starting a collaboration with a group in Singapore, so spending some time there might be possible if you're interested. The perfect candidate for this position would be at or near completion of coursework, interested in pursuing a dissertation with a computational linguistics focus, and interested in interdisciplinary collaboration with domain experts from other fields. Specific courses that would be helpful include CMSC 723 (which is offered this fall), CMSC 773, and/or LBSC 796. I hold appointments that allow me to advise Ph.D. students in Information Studies, Computer Science, and in the Applied Mathematics and Scientific Computation program. This graduate research assistantship would thus most likely be of interest to students in one of those programs, but I would be happy to talk with Ph.D. students from any program. This is a long-term position, so masters student who have not been accepted to a Ph.D. program should not apply. The position will be open until filled. You can reach me most easily by email. References from my present Ph.D. students are available upon request :-) Doug Oard, oard@umd.edu
