Title:
Static Analysis to Improve Software Reliability and Security

Abstract:
Today, software controls and even defines much of the technology we
depend on every day. Unfortunately, our ability to construct large,
complex software systems far outstrips our ability to ensure they are
reliable and secure. The result is a plethora of faulty software that
exacts a high toll---by some estimates, software bugs cost the US
billions of dollars annually.

The goal of my research is to discover fundamental new ways to improve
software reliability and security. My focus is on developing
language-based tools and techniques that find and prevent software
defects. In this talk, I will give an overview of this research area
and discuss three recent efforts by my research group in more detail:
(1) Saffire, a pair of tools that check type safety of programs written
in multiple languages; (2) Locksmith, a data race detection tool for C
programs; and (3) Pistachio, a tool for checking the correctness of C
implementations of network protocols. Saffire, Locksmith, and Pistachio
all employ static analysis, and their development has yielded a number
of contributions in this area. Among other theoretical results, Saffire
uses novel type systems to model foreign function interfaces'
cross-language view of data, and Locksmith is based on a new technique
called correlation inference that automatically discovers the
relationships between locks and shared memory. On the practical side,
all three tools have discovered numerous bugs in a wide range of open
source software such as OpenSSH and the Linux kernel.

I will conclude by discussing the future of research in this area, and
describing some new projects I am currently pursuing.
