Title: "Statistical Inference of Internal Network Loss and Topology"

Speaker: Nick Duffield, AT&T Labs, Florham Park, NJ

Date: Thursday, May 13, 1999
Time: 3 p.m.
Place: A.V. Williams Building, Room 2168
       University of Maryland, College Park

Abstract: The use of inference from end-to-end multicast measurements has
recently been proposed to find the internal characteristics in a network.
This talk describes the statistically rigorous methods for inferring link loss
rates, and their application to dentifying the underlying multicast topology.

Biography: Nick Duffield holds the B.A. in Natural Sciences (Physics and
Theoretical Physics, 1982) and the Certificate of Advanced Study in
Mathematics (1983) from the University of Cambridge, U.K. He was awarded the
Ph.D. (1987) by London University, U.K., for a study of dynamics and stability
of non-equilibrium phase-transitions in biological systems. He
held postdoctoral positions in Heidelberg, Germany, and Dublin, Ireland;
before joining the faculty of the School of Mathematical Sciences in Dublin
City University, Dublin, Ireland in 1991. Since 1995 he has been with AT&T; he
is a Technology Consultant in the Network Mathematics Research Department at
AT&T Labs-Research, Florham Park, New Jersey,
USA. His current research includes applications of probability theory to
networking, including
queueing; performance measurement inference; and analysis; large deviation
theory; and statistical mechanics.
