      THE APPLICATION OF FORMAL SOFTWARE
   INSPECTIONS IN AN INDUSTRIAL ENVIRONMENT

Michael Fagen published the seminal article on
formal software inspections in the IBM Systems
Journal in 1976. In the intervening 22 years,
the basic principles and format of the process
have changed very little, which is a remarkable
statement considering the magnitude of change
that has occurred in almost every other aspect
 of software technology.

The application of inspections in U.S. industry
has been inconsistent, however, despite overwhelm-
ing evidence of their effectiveness. Many organi-
zations have started enthusiastically, only to
lose momentum over time, for a variety of reasons.
Others, with less preparation, stumble over some
 predictable implementation problems. Still others
 encounter organizational and administrative
barriers that can sabotage the process.

This presentation will discuss the essential fea-
tures of the classic formal inspection paradigm,
different ways they have been adapted for various
purposes, more common problems, and how inspec-
tions fit in the overall software engineering
Audience participation and discussion are highly
 encouraged.
