ARGUMENTATION AS A GENERAL APPROACH TO
        DECISION MAKING UNDER UNCERTAINTY

Argumentation is a general approach to describing
reasoning under uncertainty. This talk explores the
historical roots of a particular system of argumenta-
tion, a system which provides a model of decision
making which does not require the point probability
and utility estimates of classical decision theory.
Following this introduction, the talk considers how
this system of argumentation is used in practice as
part of a system for estimating the risk of carcino-
  genicity of new chemical compounds.
