Network problem

 Hello all,

 Recently we're experiencing network hang up with our DECsystem 5500,
 Ultrix 4.4 system; the host is connected trough the thinwire, bnc connector
 to a DEC repeater; sometimes the machine hangs and the message

        ne0: setup frame transmit error

 appears on the console; the other hosts on the same cable are up an
 running; to recover from the hang, we disconnect the system, put a tap on
 the network connector and wait 10-20 minutes; by monitoring the machine, we
 see that it happens randomly, e.g. even when the machine load is low (disk,
 memory and net i/o); DEC support thinks it could be a hardware problem;
 output from 'netstat -I ne0 -s' signal an increment of 'send failures', in
 particular the 'collision detect check failure' field; I think we could try
 connecting to the network with the AUI socket; also, for better monitoring
 we enabled the 'copyall' mode on the interface, but I fear this could
 increase the probability of hang up; any idea ?

 I'll summarize,

        andrea
