Problem:
> We have a cluster of vax 6340 and three decstations 3100.
> VAX is rather old and slow and its maintenace is about to be stopped.
> Those decstations however have good monitors and could serve
> as X terminals.
> Unfortunately the version of vms which is installed on these
> decstations is very obsolete (5.2) and has no tcp/ip. On the other

To sum up: How to install some Unix for *free* on those vaxstations to
revive them yet for a while? (I.e. use them as X terminals)

Solutions:
1. Use NetBSD. It has really a port to 3100, but not yet with harddisk
support. It reqiures more discussion with NetBSD people.

2. Linux is for *decstations* and therefor couldn't help there.
Have I understood correctly? Once I've been at vax-linux homepage, I saw
number 3200. That moments I had no idea about the difference between
   decstations and vaxstations.

3. Ultrix is still a resort provided there were a free (unused) license.

4. Install a TCP/IP package under VMS for those vaxstations. Most painful
solution for people who are not specialists in vax/vms. But easiest one
   for a vms-expert.

5. One could use monitor with a cheap PC (under Linux or so) playing a role
of an X terminal. This requires:
> Given the (non-)speed of VAXstation 3100's (approximately 0.1 SPECint95,
> and that's a *real* value, not a joke), a $500 Cheapo PC system would
> give you far, far better performance. You can even use the VAXstation's
> screens on a PC: you've merely got to tell the driver to operate fixed-
> frequency (72 Hz, if i remember) and buy/build a SVGA-to-RGB cable.
