I've noticed a tremendous increase in the number of people smoking cigarettes on and near campus, but I can't figure out why. I took a good hard look at the Joe Camel ads, and they don't move me to smoke at all. Could they have worked on a certain segment of the populace for other reasons? I even asked a couple of college kids - "why do you smoke?" The first answered " because it pisses people off." Ok, but it used to be that kids grew out of their rebellious stage by about mid adolescence. Has something change in our culture? The second answered "I don't know, maybe because everyone else is doing it? If you tell me it's stupid, I'll stop." I told him and he hasn't smoked since. Strange, but nice. Normally it wouldn't matter to me what the reasons are that people would want to systematically torture their bodies with toxic chemicals, but so many people smoke now, that when I go out for a breath of fresh air, I wind up smoking a cigarette with the masses. Not to mention all the butts and globs of phlegm on the sidewalks. Glad I moved my stocks out of the Environmentally Conscious Funds into RJ Reynolds.
