UGGS GENERAL ASSEMBLY MEETING
November 19, 1997
Hellems 229
Minutes

1. Round Table Dinner
Tentative date is March 5, 1998 at 5pm.
Caryn is looking for moderators to lead discussions at various tables. To
do this, you should keep fairly current on the issue which you will be
discussing. At the end of dinner, the moderator stands up and summarizes
the discussion. The moderator must also keep everyone focused on the
topic! Before the dinner, moderators write a brief letter explaining the
topic of the table, etc. After the dinner, the moderators write up a
summary of the discussion. Remaining topics are "Is it time to reassess
and rewrite the university mission statement?", "Total learning
environment of the university," and "Enough is enough! Defining student
responsibility." If anyone would like to meoderate at one of these
tables, let Caryn know ASAP.

2. TA Award
Annie Tregouet felt that two changes should be made regarding the award.
Last year, TA's were judged based on their own statements. This year, she
proposes they submit letters of recommendation as well. (In addition to
the essay which they must write)
Also, extend the deadline to the end of January, as opposed to the
beginning of the month.
Right now, departments are only required to submit letters of nomination
as opposed to recommendation. Annie feels that the person nominating
should write a letter of recommendation (about a page) to go along with
the nomination.
Who should be the one to write the letter? The nominator? Should the
student ask the professor of their choice for a recommendation?
Suggestion was made to include a "clause" in the nomination form which
states that the judging is based partially upon a letter of recommendation
from the faculty member who is recommending the TA.
Vote was taken regarding changing these policies:
Deadline will be changed to the end of January for nomination, and the end
of March for recommendation.
Also, the wording will be changed to include a request for a letter of
recommendation.
Motion passed 14-0-0.

3. NAGPS Legislative Platform
Much of it is similar to past years, only slightly expanded.
Discussion of the resolutions followed.
Motion to approve Resolution 1997-03 (supporting the NAGPS 1998
Legislative Platform) was made and seconded.
The motion passed unanimously.

4. NAGPS Resolutions
What issues should we get involved with at the local level, by keeping
current on issues in the news, etc?
This may serve as a springboard for discussion about issues which affect
graduate students across the country. There are standing committees
within NAGPS regarding these issues in order to increase involvement
around the country.
Are there any particular issues or concerns which it would be important
for UGGS to address?
Preparing grad students to be teachers. Increasing awareness and
training. It's important for grads to know what it's like to prepare a
class, etc. as opposed to just being a TA. (The point was made that the
Graduate Teacher Program is specifically designed for this purpose. Also,
the new initiative: Preparing Future Faculty.)
If we're interested in supporting this issue, Jennifer can talk to Karen
Wyatt to see how we can better support it through, for example, Preparing
Future Faculty.
"AAUP for non-tenure track and part-time faculty" endorsement.
Does CU already endorse this?
As NAGPS puts together lists of specific issues, Jennifer will forward
that info. so that if anyone would like to get involved (as a local
watchdog for the national organization) they can.
The Western Region convention is to be in Arizona this year
(mid-February). If anyone would like to attend it, let Jennifer know.

5. Glen Miller Ballroom: January 15, 1998
What to do with the ballroom?? The entire Glen Miller Ballroom is
reserved for the 15th. Ideas for the use of the room include a Winter
Ball, Welcome Back Party, Winter Fiesta (have tango, salsa dance
instructors come to teach dance). Adam would contact dance instructors to
check on fees, etc. Whatever we decide to do, we will have to pay for
advertisements, refreshments, etc. Ron Stump promised us money (although
he will not fund alcohol), so we can request from him.
Our regular budget has been allocated, however, we can use our
champagne fund.
Suggestion was made that a budget be put together for "Tango
Madness" before approving it.
Vote on whether or not to use the room:
Unanimous in favor of using the room.
-"Tango Madness" was agreed upon as the best plan. (Parents can bring
children)
Adam will ask instructors if we allow them to bring advertisements for
their school, will they give us reduced rates?
When deciding upon the budget, figure out how many people we would need to
help.
Adam: contacting instructors
Inga: Advertisements (Use "What's Happening" in Colorado Daily, Family
Housing Newsletter, Grad newsletters, e-mail)
Laura: Food
After assessing a budget for the proposed function, the final decision
will be made via e-mail.

Reports

1. UCSU
--Open meeting this Saturday regarding UMC Expansion. CCS would like reps
from every school. Is there a grad student who would like to attend?
Starts at 8am and goes all day (approx. 12 hours). If Laura doesn't go,
then we won't be represented.
--Leg Council Bill comes up tomorrow night (regarding voting process).
All three executives were co-sponsors on the bill, so it has a good chance
of passing.
--UCSU hosted a conference last weekend. Tim did a presentation on
student fees. Athletic fee is still being "hammered away" at.

Announcements:
--December 1 is the next funding proposal deadline. Due at 5pm (can be
slid under the door BEFORE 5pm) Late proposals will NOT be considered!
--MFA shows are up at the Fine Arts Gallery through next week.

Meeting adjourned at 7:20pm
