Look into insurance sponsored by professional organizations. As a
member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE),
I get their group health insurance at low cost. It is a Preferred
Provider Organization (PPO); I can choose any doctor and hospital I
want, but get an extra break if my choice happens to be within their
PPO. Referrals are not required if I want to see a specialist. I do
not have to filter everything through a bureaucracy or a primary care
physician.

The particular plan I chose has a $0 deductible inside the PPO and
a $2000 deductible outside it. Coverage is at 90% both inside and
outside the PPO. The cost for me is $72/month.

Other professional organizations often have similar deals. Often
the only requirement for full membership in such professional
organizations is a Bachelor's degree in a related area or a year of work
experience in it. (Note that in the IEEE, being a student member does
not help. Only full members qualify to buy the insurance.)

I have been using the IEEE insurance for a year now while taking
graduate courses at CU. I am quite happy with it. I would not be at
all interested in switching to an HMO or other form of managed care. I
get the value I want with the choice I have made.
