A few days ago, I posted the following question to slug:

_____________________________________________________________|
I have an application where it seems reasonable to open |
several input files and leave them open. Times between |
reads vary from fractions of a second to hours (or a |
weekend). While the files are open (almost always), one |
of the pathnames is displayed in the progress notes spot |
(the lower right who-line area). This looks a little silly |
and appears to block more relevant displays. |
                                                             |
Question: Is there a "supported" mechanism to block this |
behavior and if so what is it? |
                                                             |
I know that I can (1) rewrite some of the who-line logic |
or (2) run a timer interrupt and close the files if, say, |
5 mins have passed and they haven't been accessed. However, |
in my opinion, these solutions are like hitting a fly |
with a sledge hammer. |
-------------------------------------------------------------|

I want to thank Mabry Tyson, Mike McMahon, Stephen Jones, and
DF@flider.maclab for taking time to respond with suggestions
about where to look. After some more research, I found the
variable fs:all-open-streams that is maintained by OPEN for
use by the wholine system but isn't relied on within the rest
of the file logic. Therefore, the simple solution to my
problem is to do my opens as
      (let(fs:all-open-streams) (open ...))
