They sound like EMD 368Mb SABRE disks?
Are we to infer that you had no improvement when you swapped the disks?
And tried one at a time? Are the disks powering up? (there is a white disk
power switch at the bottom (rear right) of the power supply bank (remove
rear panel, on left side)).

I personally have never seen an SMD io paddle die so I am more suspiscious
of the drives themselves. If they are SABRE drives and ten years old, then
that must be a record as they were one of the most unreliable drives that
Symbolics ever used. Though, as you infer, the chance of both dying at the
same time is remote (at least unless you started moving them about).

What do you see when you address each disk from the FEP? I haven't a
machine running in front of me but I seem to remember many FEP commands
like Mount Device, Reset Device, Test Disks, ...

If you do need an SMD paddle card, there ought to lots gathering dust
somewhere abouts as many 3650s were upgraded to ESDI drives and paddles
(especially S-graphics machines). The ST506, ESDI and SMD paddles are
interchangeable between all the G-machines (10, 20, 30, 50, ...) though as
far as I know the factory only installed SMD in 3650s.

If the disks have died, you can use SABRE or other SMD drives like Fujitsu
Eagle where you can simply stretch the ribbon cables out to external
drives. You will only need one drive to get Genera up. Remember to try to
get the IFS tape if you can find a disk. Otherwise make a listing of the
badblocks asap.

Perhaps you can give as much detailed diagnostic information as possible.
