Of course you need a disk (about 300 Mega are necessary to install the Lisp
Machine File System (LMFS) and the FEP). Personally I would suggest that
you hook a hard disk of one giga containing all the sources, documentation
and you own files. Of course, you can also keep the documentation and sources
on CD rom (be careful about CD-readers, they do not all read Symbolics CD's)
and be happy with a 300-500 Mega HD for the LMFS and FEP (the disk itself can
have an invisible partition A for the ivory side (or several) and a
partition B for the mac side).

I had planned to mount a CD-ROM on a MacIvory with the Genera 8.3
CD-ROM so it could get the sources from there. Unfortunately, it
appears that the 8.3 files are on that CD as tape files. Ie, the
Ivory would read them like a tape rather than access them as a file
system. I tried an earlier CD-ROM (8.0???) and the files were there
    as a file system.

the symbolics 8.3 cd-rom is mastered as an iso-9660 file system.

it contains a complete symbolics source hierarchy, including bundled products, color,
and the previously restricted sources.

it also contains distribution world files for a plain and color 8.3 world.

it also containts (aren't cd's wonderful...) a directory of files representing symbolics
"distribution tapes". the "distribution" format is a standard symbolics tape format
previously used for product distribution on 1/4 inch and dc-2000 tape cartridges. the
standard way of restoring distribution tapes "works" for the files on cd-rom as well.
its pretty clear from the interface how to specify a file vs. tape.

you almost certainly want to use the cd-rom as the file system for all system sources
and documentation.
