This morning a piece of junk mail was sent to a mailing list that I
run (SLUG@AI.SRI.COM). The sender hid his email identity apparently
to avoid detection. As best I can tell, the mail originated on a host
"pm1-62.ixc.net" (198.70.48.62) and was routed to us via Cornell.EDU.
No email address was given in the message but (allegedly) a fax and US mail
address were included:
718-967-1144 (24 hrs. per day, 7 days a week),
Magazine Club Inquiry Center
Att. Internet services dept.
PO Box 120990
Staten Island NY 10312-0990
The message was allegedly from a "Janet Dove". I doubt the veracity
of the name and I wonder about the validity of the US Mail address.
If this message gets to the sending person or company, I hereby
request and require that you do not send any further mail to any
address at AI.SRI.COM, either directly or indirectly. Mail responding
to this message may be sent to Tyson@SRI.COM. You shall not distribute
any such address to any other individuals or organizations and, if you
already have done so, require them to remove that address from their
listings and from any listings at companies or individuals to whom they
may have passed the address. I also request that you give me information
as to how you acquired such addresses so I can contact the source to
have my addresses removed there.
I ask the people at IXC.NET to determine who sent this mail so I can
get a valid email address of the account sending this mail. If I can
not get such an address or they repeat sending junk mail via IXC.NET,
I will reject all mail from IXC.NET that comes to AI.SRI.COM and will
suggest to other sites (including Cornell) that mail from IXC.NET be
blocked.
The people at IXC.NET may further wish to check with the state and
federal authorities to determine if the company or individuals involved
are in a valid business and are not wanted for fraudulent activity.
Because a US Mail address is involved, the postal authorities may
have information.
I expect replies from IXC.NET and CORNELL.EDU so I can understand what
they are doing to remedy this problem.
