To any SGI users,

	SGI has decided to end the varsity agreement that has provided educational institutions with discounted software licenses for commonly used programs like fortran compilers. SGI is replacing varsity with a program called EduCare. EduCare will provide more direct support from SGI to you, the end user. SGI has also decided to make IRIX updates (6.5.17->6.5.18) only available to customers with a support contract, such as EduCare.
	EduCare is expected to cost $1100 per machine per year. I am told this is still significantly cheaper than getting a contract for IRIX alone. SGI realizes that this is a large increase from the varsity costs and thus will "grandfather in" existing varsity customers at a lower rate. This rate is dependent on the machine contracted, but is estimated at $140 per year. We have a limited time to add machines to the varsity agreement so we must ask you to reply to us by friday at noon if you have any machines you would like to add to the contract.
