Message from Barry Wells <acebarry@mindspring.com>:
Dear cycling and trail friends,
Cyclists, walkers, wheelchair users, skaters and equestrians will be
carrying water from the Gulf of Mexico at Key West, Florida and adding
waters from all the States and the District of Columbia along the eastern
seaboard. These will be mixed with Canadian waters from the Pacific and
Atlantic Oceans and Hudson Bay at the international border in a symbolic
joining of our countries by a system of automobile-free, multi-user
trails.
Monday, April 24th will be the date for the Washington, DC to Maryland
segment of the East Coast Greenway Wave Event. The ride portion,
transporting the bottles to the press event on the WB&A, will leave Fort
Totten Metro at 7:30 a.m. sharp. Those wanting to join the ride are
welcome. Wear a helmet and ride safely.
Our route will follow most of the planned East Coast Greenway and American
Discovery Trail alignment from the Metropolitan Branch Trail connection at
Fort Totten in Washington, DC to the new (to be completed this July) WB&A
Trail in Glenn Dale, MD. This is a very pleasant and scenic corridor,
following the route of the proposed Anacostia Gateway Trail (PG Connector)
the Northwest and Northeast Branch Trails, Lake Artemesia and Indian Creek
and up through the rolling farmlands of the Beltsville Agricultural
Research Center.
We have one short rest stop planned in Greenbelt. The cue sheet below
describes the route and timeline for the ride and folks can meet the ride
en route and join in. We'll be doing a fairly easy 12-13 mph rolling
pace, completing the 23 mile ride in 2.5 hours.
The water must be at the WB&A trailhead lot on Electric Ave. by 10:00 a.m.
Like the Pony Express, nuthin's gonna stay these couriers....
>From that point, dignitaries, officials, volunteers and trail fans will
walk the bottles a mile up the Trail to Glenn Dale Recreation Center and
Splash Park for a ceremony celebrating the East Coast Greenway as a
National Millenium Trail and the WB&A as a proposed segment of the
interstate route. Speakers will include:
Dave Dionne- National Trail Chairman, East Coast Greenway
Gene Contee- US Department of Transportation
John Barry- US Department of Interior
John Porcari- MD Secretary of Transportation
M-NCPPC - Speaker to be announced
Dan Maletic- MD ECG Chair
For those wanting to join the ride a little later or ride a little less,
you may join the group en route. Follow the timeline on the cue sheet
below for the rendevous points. Bring friends and family, those lucky
enough to get off work on Easter Monday. Or just gather up the kids and
bring them out on this springtime morning for a sneak preview of Prince
George's newest trail, the WB&A. Please pass along this announcement to
folks you know that might be interested. See you there.
