Summary (Was: Where to go for crabs in DC area?) Ok, I've gotten several replies and also requests for a summary, so here you are. I guess I should have mentioned I was interested in steamed crabs, not live, but I also got suggestions for those, which I'll use for future reference. From Barry Warsaw <warsaw@anthem.nlm.nih.gov>, who recognized himself in the original post: >The place in Rockville is Camaroon's. Their on 355 across from Montgomery >College, right next to the Metro tracks. They usually have great crabs >and often the best prices locally. From Chris Hersman <hersman@aplcomm.jhuapl.edu>: >We go to Cameron's in Silver Spring. There is also one in rockville. The >quality is good, but the prices seem a little high. > >I've also heard that Bethesda Seafood in Kensington has good seafood prices, >but I have never been there. (I'm not sure if they carry crabs). I've also >heard that it is difficult to find, so if you plan to go there, call first >for directions. This is a likely place, but I'll have to compare prices with others. From Neil Weisenfeld <weisen@alw.nih.gov>: >I've never actually bought crabs there, but the DC waterfront should provide >what you're looking for. On Water St. off of Maine Ave. and right next to >Phillip's Flagship Restaurant (so you can call them and ask for directions). From Richard Peters <peters@nvl.army.mil> (just in under the wire): >Go to the Maine Ave. Waterfront in D.C. for your crabs. Several vendors >are there so you can shop around and bargain a bit. With a little luck, >$45 will get you a bushel of large crabs, $12-20 for a dozen cooked. Some >things to be wary of: 1) Feel the crabs to gauge their weight. Sometimes a >vendor's mediums are heavier than another vendor's large. 2) Reheated crabs >tend to have soggy meat. Some of the vendors will steam fresh ones for you. >It only takes 22 minutes to steam a batch of crabs (probably two >batches/bushel) and is worth the wait. From my brother-in-law, who is a non-netter: >USA Seafood in Kensington. Good crabs, great prices. And for those of you who thought you were safe from inanity while schools are out for the summer: From David Misek <misekd@wl.com>: >Why don't you go to your local prostitute. You can get crabs from her, and >they are cheap. Geez- WHAT DID YOU EXPECT FOR $5, Lobster????? Which makes me wonder if he read my original post or not... Anyway, thanks for (most of) your comments. David
