The Washington Post did a feature on grocery prices last year (November, I
think). They concluded that Giant and Safeway are typically the most expensive
grocery chains. I never really cared for Super Fresh, because they were an
expensive grocery chain when I lived in the Norfolk, VA area. I haven't
looked to see if they're a reasonable chain on the DC area price scale :-)

Prices in Shoppers Food Warehouse and Food Lion stores are the same at all area
stores. This is not true in either the Safeway or Giant chain (I don't remember
which one). They price groceries more expensively, depending on what they think
customers in the neighborhood will pay, so prices vary from store to store.
I try to purchase most of my food at inexpensive stores. 

The Price Club in Fairfax (near Fair Oaks mall) has a meat counter now.
Price Club is similar to Pace Warehouse and Sam's Wholesale.
You can buy some foods, and 20 rolls of toilet paper, shampoo in 1/2 gallon
bottles, ...
