Any good restaurants in the area worthy of a visit? I won't try to characterize the cuisine, though there are Middle Eastern and Indian elements in it. Nothing I've had has been at all fiery-spicey, but the seasoning can be interesting and subtle. I've tried a couple of Afghan places in the Washington suburbs (one in Va, one in Md - sorry, I can't recall the names), without being terribly impressed. Here in Baltimore, though, ther's a very good Afghan place: Helmand, on Charles, in an area with a couple of good Indian places, a Vietnamese place, and others. Helmand's food is much better and more carefully done than any other Afghan place I've been to (including one in LA I used to visit fairly often, and one in Chicago). The menu is pretty small, but unless you plan to eat there every day it's quite enough to provide variety on an occasional visit. Portions are rather small, but priced very reasonably (order several courses: you won't regret it, either when the food comes or when you get the bill). And they have a surprisingly good wine list, at least for a restaurant representing the cooking of a Muslim country. --Steve Anderson
