At least in New Jersey, the first regional shopping centers >(e.g., Menlo Park, Woodbridge) were built in the early-to-mid 60`s... I don't understand the comment on Reston's regional shopping center concept... These "regional" shopping complexes were planned so as to "contain" the shops which serve the Reston community and was an attempt to manage commercial development.. This way, the planned community concept, commercial development was located in certain areas and a mix of different stores were located together.. These shopping centers in Reston are in no way comparable to "indoor malls" or large shopping complexes.. They are spread around the Reston community and blend in with the environment. My personal opinion is that they are too small to provide the variety necessary for commercial viability and blend in so well that most non-Reston shoppers tend not to know/see their locations... For Reston, the word "regional" means more neighborhood.. close to homes so that walking is possible, yet built so as to blend into the community.. . . . ...
