Since I unwittingly started this brouhaha over Maharaja (brouhaha? ha ha ha --- for you Firesign Theatre fans out there), I feel obliged to modify/explain my original statement. I definitely agree with Sunil about the prices and quality of food at Siddhartha; it's my favorite restaurant in the area, especially since it's all vegetarian and has south Indian dishes (wish I could make idlis as good as theirs, sigh). However, the original posting asked for suggestions in the Laurel-Bowie area, which to me includes Greenbelt but not Silver Spring. Also, he was looking for a place to bring a first date, and let's face it, the Silver Spring Siddhartha has all the ambience of a high school cafeteria. At least it's alot cleaner than their downtown location... Anyway, going there on a first date might be chancy. On the other hand, I've had a couple of meals at Maharaja that were definitely worse than usual --- I think their cook was off on vacation during those times, not that that's a good excuse for any restaurant. Interesting that you thought their food was greasier than Siddhartha's; I know several people who refuse to go back to Siddh. because they claim it's excessively greasy. There's no accounting for taste! How about starting a new thread --- what is(are) your favorite Indian restaurant(s) in the area, and why? Much to my surprise I recently found a very good place in Annapolis (not worth an extra trip, but if you're there anyway). Think it's called the Indian Palace but I could be completely wrong. It's near the Statehouse, and it appeared to be the only Indian restaurant in town. More opinions, anyone? BTW, which end of Charles st. is Akbar on? Judy Karpen karpen@nrlfs1.nrl.navy.mil
