The recent tipping thread here made me think about something I'd heard 
about before and recently experienced myself: a restaurant padding the 
tax rate applied to the bill, whether by mistake or otherwise.

In my case and in another case where it happened to a friend, the amount 
wasn't much on a percentage basis, 6% instead of the usual 5% (in 
Maryland), but it certainly could add up, from a restaurant's point of 
view, if they made a "mistake" on every customer's bill, or even on 
every other one.  

Does you regularly do the maths to verify that the tax added to the food 
bill is correct for the locality?  Dysnumeric as I am, I'm still going 
to try to do so more often, and also start asking for a receipt, 
particularly at fast food places that don't offer one as a matter of 
course.
