USA today published a finding recently, that I have quoted before, namely that the number of cars on superhighways and only secondary roads is nearly equal (2% difference), yet the death rate on the secondary roads is three times higher, despite lower speed limits. USA Today forgot to say that even though the number of vehicles is nearly equal, three times as many superhighway miles are driven than on secondary roads. This means that the death rate on superhighways is actually about 9 times less for an equal number of miles driven. And my gripe is that we have had to listen to butt-head politicians preach to us long enough about why they keep fighting higher speed limits on superhighways and interstates, and we have had to put up with their "tax traps" long enough too. (Even in Maryland when the limits went up, the death-rates went down, and its former governor even wrote editorials stating how he was just saving lives by opposing higher limits. Boy was he dead wrong. Pun intended.) If people and politicians want to preach about saving lives, let's lower the limits on all secondary roads to about 25 mph, because that's what it would take to equalize the death rate to that of the superhighways. If they are not willing to do this, then its shear hypocrisy to preach against higher speed limits superhighways. Raise the limits more! In summary, they are full of crap. (I even know people who using this false assumption, avoid superhighways believing they are so dangerous, and use secondary roads believing they are so safe, but they are dead wrong too.)
