wrob@erols.com said something like: :>>Me, I love DC. Lived here for 26 years. It's hard to watch a frienddie, especially when it doesn't have to... : Do you love the Eckington/Shaw area between Mount Vernon and North : Capitol? Prez Clinton and the BOT have placed a new freeway on top of : these neighborhoods in the top ten FEDERAL transportation area wish list. : Yep, turning that area into a freeway-shadow perpetual wasteland of empty : lots, a perpetual trackside slum in the nations capitol Uh, you haven't driven New York Ave in a while, have you? I'm thinking, mm, 40 years? Oh, and since any freeway automatically ruins a neighborhood (turning it into a Detroit slum, apparently), I guess you haven't visited north Arlington or Falls Church since 1983, either... and the future : site of postcard snapshots (the worlds most famous onramp: the National : Capital Gateway) will make DC alot more business friendly, on par with : Detroit, where many similar areas of "reserve parking" have proven more : valuable to the tax base than the (hundred year old) neighborhoods of : poor and middle class people they displaced. (Given that world class run-on sentence, it's best to respond thusly) 1. What Middle class? 2. A vast majority of the 100-year-old homes along this part of NY Ave are abandonded. 3. You would prefer a swath cut through Foxhall Rd instead? 4. Detroit lost its industrial base, which is why it lost its population. DC has had the potential to not only hold every one of its jobs, but to add signifcantly. Poor management and myopic leadership ensured that those jobs moved not to Canada or Japan, as with Detroit, but merely across a narrow river. WHile both Detroit AND Michigan have been hit hard, the stark contrast between DC and NoVA, DC and suburban MD, hell DC vs Baltimore, make the Detroit comparison worth little but a good laugh. -- > B E N T L E Y < bentley AT digex DOT net A long frisbee throw from the pungent and lovely Potomac River www.access.digex.net/~bentley/remove-this-bot-blocking-part
