Now, what's bugging me is it ISN'T just LOL's. My dear parents (aged 78 and
"older than 39, dear") are still successfully operating their motor vehicles
in California, and do not engage in the behaviors we are describing. I make
a point of riding with them whenever I'm home, so I can make sure they are
still "road-worthy." My dad has been known to drive over the speed limit
when conditions are safe to do so--or when driving the limit will get you
rear-ended--and my sainted, ever-so-British mother has been observed wailing
away on her horn with various invectives at some idiot in front of her who
doesn't want to obey basic rules of the road. Her comment is that age gives
one the capacity for expressing true feelings. Oh boy, something to look
forward to!! Frankly, their age has given them a certain amount of
"road-wiliness" and since they recognize the ol' reaction-times aren't as
good as they used-ta be, they avoid situations where they won't be able to
handle it. Dad recently gave up driving on the freeway, for instance. So
given they are LOM and LOL in NAD (Little old man and little old lady in no
apparent distress), the issue of "driving while Virginian" (DWV) doesn't
seem to be simply an issue of age. BTW, the lady with "the vapors" appeared
to be in her 40's.

Also, is there some rule against making left turns on green here in VA? I've
been following some folks recently who seem to have to have a gilt-edged
invitation to make the turn. I'm sitting back there chanting "Go, Go, Go, Go
team Go!!" and they just sit there. Lane changes too--just how many
car-lengths are required to be courteous? I've been TRYING to be nice and
let people in, but I hang back there, and they just don't seem to want to
chance it. Must have been getting my VA plates that did it--they don't want
to trust me now.
