Thank you for all your wonderful advice. In previous trips, I had done
the TappanZee-87-684-84-Pike route, and been miserable everytime because
of Hartford. Plus, a call to AAA told me that there are a couple of big
construction zones on 84. So here's the route that I took.

I took the normal routes to get up to the Turnpike in Jersey, and then
switched over to the GSP so I could take the TappanZee bridge. Wise choice
I found out b/c they had to do some emergency construction on the GW and
it was going to waste any time savings. Then, rather than take the 684-84
way, I followed 287 down to I-95 and continued on 95 until I-395. (This
would have been incredibly fast, except a crane oveturned at one of the
minor construction sites along the way and this stopped traffic for quite
a bit). I-395 has to be the fastest highway on the East Coast. No tolls,
no construcitons, no potholes, no cops, no traffic, no morons from Florida
with their turn signal on. I found a driving partner (a Nissan Pulsar NX)
and we tooled through that road in no time. I then got on the Mass Pike
and finished my trip.
