You don't live in the city do you. Try using "skillful driving" in rush hour Boston traffic to "keep one side clear"...impossible. >Second, trucks are big and do not change position very quickly. I agree that one must make an extra effort to watch out for trucks, but it's not reasonable to assume that all situations can be avoided. Trucks have BIG blind spots...even if you are trying very hard to move safely and quickly by a truck they still don't always see you...and sometimes pick the "wrong moment" to change lanes. >Maintaining a decent following distance is simply a specific case of the >idea of having a "buffer zone". Your buffer zone should extend in all >directions, not just ahead of you. If you can maintain such a buffer I agree that a forward buffer is important...and is often sacrificed (I am no exception) in traffic, etc. But you just can't always maintain a large buffer zone on the sides...traffic just prevents it sometimes. As for the green light example. Of ocurse you should always watch for red light runners, but it's not YOUR fault if you're hit by one. Red light runners (in snow or otherwise) are driving recklessly. >zone 95% of the time, that immediately cuts down the chances of an >accident by a factor of twenty. Let's see some numbers to support that one! ---------------------------------------------- dco2393@rit.edu "Never trust a man in a blue trenchcoat, never drive a car when you're dead" -Tom Waits Randy sez...
