Md. trooper injured after chase on I-95 By The Associated Press PERRYVILLE - A state trooper was injured when a semi-tractor trailer eluding state police on Interstate 95 rammed two squad cars. The chase came to a halt when officers shot out the truck tires, authorities said. First Sgt. Daniel Benham, a 21-year veteran, was taken to a local hospital with nonlife-threatening injuries, according to state police. The chase began Monday afternoon in Baltimore, where the truck driver, Gregory M. Wallace, was wanted for assaulting a police officer. Troopers began chasing the Freightliner truck shortly before 4 p.m. in Harford County and the pursuit continued north into Cecil County. State police said Wallace was driving recklessly and putting other drivers' lives at risk. Officers tried unsuccessfully to stop the truck with tire deflation devices known as stop sticks as it passed a toll plaza in Perryville. The front right tire and one of the rear tandem tires were punctured, but the truck kept going. About three miles north, state police said Wallace intentionally rammed two patrol cars. One car spun one into an embankment, injuring Benham. The other car was left disabled in the center lane of I-95. Finally, a patrol vehicle pulled alongside the truck and a trooper fired at the tires. The truck slowed to a halt and Wallace was arrested without incident. He was taken to Harford Memorial Hospital, treated for minor injuries and released. Wallace, 36, of Baltimore was arrested and charged with two counts of attempted murder of a police officer and two counts of first-degree assault on a police officer. State police are trying to determine a motive. A glass pipe with suspected crack cocaine was found on Wallace. ==================================== http://cold.jrnl.com/cfdocs/new/mc/story.cfm?paper=mc§ion=fp&snumber=11 Geez, it's getting rough out there!
