There should be some research done on the Chinese and their driving style. The Chinese must have shit for brain judging from the way they drive. In areas where infested with Chinese, driving can be extremely frustrating and hazardous to your physical and mental health. Many Chinese never had any driving experience in China then suddenly find themselves on a fancy Mercedes on the streets of the US. Most often the Chinese get driving lessons from another shit-for-brain Chinese, whose driving skill is just as bad. For some reasons, these Chinese think they own the road when they drive a Mercedes. BTW, what's up with Mercedes and the Chinese? It seems as if the Chinese (including Hongkongnese and Taiwanese) think they could elevated themselves socially by driving a luxury car. In reality, they only damage the good names of prestigious cars, especially with the annoying and dangerous ways they drive.

In many places over there, courteous driving is almost none-existence. Drivers don't stop for pedestrians and in some places, not even at designated pedestrian crossings. It has a lot to do with the pedestrians too. It is not an understatement to say that the way of ife in certain areas is that if anything happens, the one with the deeper pocket is gouged first. Needless to say, it is the person who owns a car that often has a deeper pocket. In short and in fairness, I can say that there is very little coorporation between motorists and pedestrians. In fairness, I would say climate conditions, socio-economics, and culture influence the way people behave. Anyway, we all learnt how to dodge the cars by trial and error. After managing to cross one busy intersection, one of us mentioned that "You don't know how good we have it back home (US)" and all of us lauged as if we heard a very funny joke. Thinking back in time, I relaized that there is isn't really anything funny about this. Observations like this reminds me time and again, regardless of race religion or culture, of the saying that goes along the lines that "A nation is made up of its people" and "It's all about standards." Unfortunately, it is from a somewhat controversial source, but the more you think about it the more thruth it seems to carry. This is not necessarily targeted towards Chinese or any particular group, but just in general. Just my two cents ...

You got me thinking. I assume you are asking if the drivers see the pedestrians. I believe they do in half of the cases. However, the idea that the pedestrian has the right of way may not necessarily be given much emphasis in driver trainning. On the other hand, even if that is the case, in extreme cases, I can imagine pedestrians standing in front of vehicles purposely and extorting money from the motorists. I guess it boils down to informal education, which in my opinion is more fundamental than formal education. The majority of people there have reasonably good levels of formal education. Where they fail miserably and on a massive scale is in informal education, like being observant of everyday issues and reason. That is a whole topic in it self though. Interesting that you said that the ped-kill rate is less in NY than in CA. The next time I am in those places, I will pay more attention to car-man interaction :) Cheers ...
