uninstalling

I suspect I'm a lot better off in my ignorance, when my
home partition starts filling up, to get rid of stuff in it than I
am trying to enlarge the partition. I've had to once already, and
managed just by rm against stuff I'd put there.

Next time, no doubt, I'll have to find things I don't use
and uninstall them instead of just using rm against what I see in
my home directory. (Egad! Maybe I'm woeful late with this question
already! Help Thou, O Tux, mine uncluefulness ...)

Is uninstalling a big deal in linux? Is there a
simple-minded way to do at least a minimally adequate job, without
leaving unwholesome detritus scattered all over my hard disk in
spots?
