Makes little difference what the law is. Do you think anyone who wakes
up or comes home during a robbery is going to be thinking about what the
law says. The VERY first thing I'm going to do is find a weapon... any
weapon... the best weapon I can get my hands on because I DON'T KNOW who,
how many people or what their armed with. If I can, then a gun is
what I'm going to go get. Never mind that if I pull the trigger on
someone I might go to jail. I'm thinking about saving my own life,
otherwise no judge is going to have the opportunity to let a jury figure
out if I was right or not. I want a gun because it is the best weapon for
killing AND/OR incapacitating that there is on the market, and I'm not
trying to be fair to the burgler who may use a knife. I don't want a fair
fight. I want as unfair a fight in my favor as I can get, because I don't
do this for a living and I need the edge. Until there's a trained cop for
every house instantly the moment I need one, it's up to me, and no one
else, to protect my life and the lives of those I love.
On the other hand, the very next thing I'm going to do is get the hell
out of there and call the police, because I don't WANT to shoot someone
and I dont WANT to take the chance I'm not going to be faster than the
burgler. If during that time I bump into the burgler(s), then I'm going
to shoot first and ask questions later, because if I don't, the burgler
may. Who gives a ticks butt hair what the law reads when my life, and
possibly the lives of my family are being threatened. Going to jail is
the least of my worries and I will gladly do it if I can safeguard my
family. So take your law books and your court presidents and stick 'em in
the very dark place where your brains obviously are.
You take away my gun, and the only thing you are doing is giving the
burglars better odds. That's all. That is unacceptable. It doesn't
matter how often you throw statistics around that say guns cause death in
the home or how countries who have bans on guns are safer... it makes no
difference because it's not the gun... it never was the gun. Switzerland
is statistically one of the safests countries (from firearms at least) in
the world, and most houses have guns in them because of the way their
reserves are structured. It is the attitude of the people that have their
hands on the guns that is the problem. There are three types of gun
owners in this country (the US) Criminals, law-abiding citizens who know
how to use/store/maintain their weapon, and those who don't know how to
use/store/maintain their weapon. Gun bans make it moderately harder for
criminals to get firearms, impossible by definition for law-abiding
citizens to get firearms, giving the advantage to the criminals. It also
has the unfortunate side-effect of making formerly law abiding citizens
into criminals because they live in neighborhood that make them more
afraid of being attacked then of going to jail for owning a gun for
protection. None of that solves any problems. No so-called 'gun control'
law has ever addressed the problem of educating the public on the
use/storage/maintenance of firearms. They either want to take the guns
away, make them harder to get (for criminals and everyone else) usually by
adding red tape so that any sane person would just give up trying to get a
gun legally (not usually a big setback for a criminal) Registrations
schemes are as big a joke as getting a license to drive a car. You
basically prove you know which end is the dangerous bit and you've got it,
or there are so many restrictions that you can't really carry the gun with
you (which is quite often the whole point) Trigger locks that only work
when the ammunition isn't in the weapon, waiting periods where the
background of the person is being checked, but usually isn't, or isn't
checked for the right things, like serious mental illness is skipped while
local therapy for marital problems send up a red flag, or previously
convicted for murder somehow isn't checked, but shoplifting is clearly a
murderous threat to society) It's like Jaywalking being a moving
violation.. stupid.
All you people here talking about what should be legal and what
shouldn't don't know a rat fart unless you've been in a situation where
having a gun might save your life. This country wasn't founded on
president. We don't need to look back on what others did before us, or on
what works for other countries. Europe is Europe. If what worked for
them would work for us, we should go there, not bring their laws here.
Every country is different, ours more so than most. Our personalities are
different. We have more cultural diversity than any other country, and
probably more cultural friction than any other country. Try thinking for
yourself. Ask yourself what you would do about personal safety, knowing
it's no one elses job but your own. Stay out of unsafe areas? Can you do
that? Is there any place on the planet that is totally safe from
violence? Don't antagonize anyone? At best, you get pushed around
because you don't want to push back, and at worst, someone simply takes
what you have because you won't stop them, and quite possible takes your
life? Let the police handle it? The fastest I've ever seen the police
respond to a crime (not counting the time it took someone to recognize a
crime was taking place and reaching a phone) is around five minutes. Any
police officer will tell you that's on the quick side and doesn't normally
happen. So to handle it, they have to get there. Before they do, it's up
to you. If it's a burglary, maybe you can run next door, or to a friends
house, IF you don't accidentally catch them in the act. A mugging? You
can't run away unless you fight them off or suprise them. If they have a
gun, they might shoot you for giving them trouble, or shoot you after you
do everything they tell you. Even if you survive, nine times out of ten,
the police arrive after a crime has been committed and not during. Even
five minutes can be an eternity. Ask yourself what you would do, and then
ask yourself how you could best accomplish it. If you think you can do it
without a weapon, then you're braver than most ordinary people.
I have only one or two things to say about hunters and gun collectors:
Fuck 'em. That's recreation, and has nothing whatsoever to do with your
rights, personal protection, or crime. There are many things we can't
have because the government says we can't. Some of those prohibitions are
valid, and some of them aren't, but none of them are cause for angry
protesters to say our rights are being taken away.

Well.. I've take up far too much of your time and mine already, so I
better let you get back to your petty bickering about statistics and books
and name calling. You post rebuttals and I'll probably let them slide.
There are far too few hours in the day for me to spend it flinging stuff
all over these newsgroups. Those of you who wish to can send rebuttals by
email. I won't flame you or bite your heads off, and they will probably
get answered, although I don't guarantee timely answers. Those of you who
were interested in opinions on gun control should have read this far.
Those who didn't, Fuck 'em. They know who they are, and the rest of you
should be able to find them out.

Good morning and thank you for your time.
