And there are also quite a few who press the wrong key, This is much less of a problem (Malcolm Muir and the current anarchist on demon.ip.support.unix, apart) than it used to be because all the mass market products now thread properly. In fact, I seem to remember that CPPNews is one of the problem programs, as a result of not handling continuation lines properly. >and start a new thread when they really meant to contribute to an existing >one. > >Cppnews therefore also offers threading by Subject. This is selected from >the Options menu - just turn OFF the tick next to "Thread by Reference". trn, does the best of both worlds. It threads all threadable threads completely, then looks at all the subjects of the articles and combines everything with a subject in that set into a forest of thread trees. You can still see the individual subjects and where the subject changes. I actually implemented an outboard threader for CPPNews, a couple of years ago in Perl, although it is limited because CPPNews can't represent missing and expired articles and can't show subject changes in the way that trn does. It was in Perl, although it exposed a bug in the Perl 4 port for DOS and I was moving to Linux at the time, so it mainly got run under Linux until I had C-News and trn up. I think the bug was to do with embedded carriage return characters. It's 248 lines long, if anyone is interested. -- David Woolley, London, England david@djwhome.demon.co.uk (Sending any email to this site constitutes a licence to copy it to any company which might reasonably be assumed to have transported it or might reasonably be assumed to service any addresses quoted in it. 15Sep1996)
