In article <817773091snz@keris.demon.co.uk> Chris Croughton <chris@keris.demon.co.uk> writes: >One suggestion could be to replace the underscore with a digit as well, >or hyphen (there aren't many other characters legal in DOS filenames - >quote, hash, bang?)... A lot of surprising things are legal in DOS filenames. Space is, for instance, though I haven't got a full list to hand ! Command.com's filename parsing has to be stricter because of the command-line meanings of |, <, >, but I think almost anything is legal according to DOS. There used to be an editor floating around that didn't check filenames for being command.com legal but relied on the DOS call, and it was a regular support question as to how to remove a DOS file it'd created with a space in the name. (The best answer is to use rename with a wildcard, which again bypasses command.com's checking). And then there's "EA DATA . SF" :-) Nick
