Any ISP who configures their server, by default, to need this on the sort of account where KA9Q or Agent or Turnpike is most likely to be used is: 1) being lazy; 2) not thinking about security; 3) hasn't yet realised (unlike Demon and Pipex) that standard reader type access servers can't cope with massive numbers of readers, especially when they are offline readers. (INN is optimised as a backbone system, not specifically for support of readers, and definitely not for KA9Q.) (1) and (2) are arguable on commercial grounds (doing things "properly" may increase administrative costs). Steffi should ask his ISP to remove transfer permissions and at the same time ask what their plans are for replacing their news servers with ones suitable for massive offline reading. -- David Woolley, London, England david@djwhome.demon.co.uk
