I confess I was answering the question I imagined was asked,
instead of actually reading it.
Since, for my own use, I can alter either Snews or Mail2Snz
source, I was rather locked into the idea of modifying
Snews. On religious grounds I dislike modifying headers
where I can avoid it.
Adding a follow-up line within mail2snz is a good idea as a
stop-gap. I've appended your post to my m2s_todo file. I'd
probably do it with an option, so it could be dropped as
soon as Snews could do better.
What I'd like in Snews would be (*).
(*) I haven't really firmed up on a 'right' solution. I guess
some combination of looking in the header for a Newsgroup line,
searching a file that describes what to do with 'r' and 'f'
for specific newsgroups, especially the fake ones, checking
the 1st char to decide real/fake, all or none of the above
and not necessarily in that order!
But, of course, putting these kind of things into the std
release of Snews could also encounter religious objections
from others. I find Snews marvellous for handling mailing
lists and mail (though the latter can be tricky if you
have a large amount of mail -- I've added a kluge to turn
off subject threading and display in order of arrival, which
is sometimes handy). But people might reasonably point
out to me that there's nothing in Snews for handling
anything but NEWS. And if it had been intended otherwise,
it would have been called Snews-n-mail-n-mailing-lists.
Whereas the mods I'm proposing above are very specific
to the needs of its use as a mailing list reader, and
the extra memory for the code would be begrudged.

Agreed, except for my religious issue, which an option
switch placates.
