Try leaving your STARTUP.NOS as it was. Log in. After the logon
sequence has completed wait about five to ten seconds then type:

ppp sl0

(Note the this is S-L-zero in lower case not S-one-zero.)

This should tell you about the connection. Round about the second
paragraph you should see something about "LCP - waiting for remote
host to open". Typing:

ifconfig sl0 up

should make the modem SD/RD lights flicker like they did for a non
Ascend line. Typing:

ppp sl0

again should reveal that the connection has been made.

If this works, just assign it to a function key (I can't get the
"wait" and "status up" thingies to work either).

It can be slow but this sounds like something more serious than just
your setup. A typical Ascend does the following:

dial tone - direct connection without rings - "du-finch" server.

>I thought ok, let's try STiK and CAB. Similar thing, ages to login, then
>eventually the line always drops. All I did for STiK was change the phone
>number is that right?

Get NOS working first.
