Hi
I will be testing ways to get onto the internet, to find a minimum
requirement.
Anyway the software you require is simple:
HS modem to fix the serial bug.
STiK or STinG (I use STinG)
That will connect you up, you will then need internet clients.
I use:
Newsie - as this is a newsreader, email, ftp and text web browser.
CAB - for web browsing.
I also connected, and am still, to Demon BEFORE I got a pc. I still use
them every now and then.
If you want help etc.. and you use IRC, then the chaps and chappesses of
channel #atari and #atariscne will usually help.
I use atarIRC client although there are others.
There is a newsgroup or 2 that most Atarians read:
comp.sys.atari.st
comp.sys.atari.st.tech
although they have ST in the title doesn't mean it is ST only, they
cater for most Atari computers, STacy, Portfolio, TT, Falcon... even
sometimes the Jag.

A modem (obviously), HSModem v0.7 and a TCP/IP stack. Which stack you can use will depend on the memory available in your ST. If it's 1Mb, STiK or STinG will work, but you won't have a lot of available memory for other programs. With 2Mb, you can use Magic and, therefore, IConnect. With 4Mb, you can use Mint and NAES, adding mintnet as the stack. I used to use Magic with STinG on a 4Mb STE. That, with other memory resident programs, took up 1.2Mb leaving plenty of space for POPWatch for mail fetching, NEWSwatch for news fetching, AtarIRC an IRC client and CAB 1.5 for browsing. -- David Bolt
