I am very sorry to burden you all with a question that will have been asked MANY times before, but we are old Demon users, that now require us to change our Demon access from Win98 to Mac (that runs our video editing suite) Being fairly Mac-illiterate we have managed to get a long way e.g. have connected and setup the modem and managed to get it to dial out to a Demon ROMP, but our problem appears that that modems will not connect i.e. all the right 'noises are made' but after a short period of time the modems will fail to connect - we have had a few (5%) successes at connection, but are now reaching the end of our tether. The specs are : Apple G3 running OS 8.5 US Robotics 56K external modem We have trawled the Demon FAQ site, but have had very little luck in finding any relevant docs. Is there anywhere where we can find a definitive doc for setting up this combination. Basically the problem would initially appear to be modem negotiation (what are the recommended settings for the US Robotics and how do we change them? - short of plugging into a PC and using Hyperterm!) and what other Mac IP settings should we be looking for (once we get a solid modem connection). Any suggestions (or where we should look for existing docs) would be gratefully accepted, and once again thank you for your consideration. Best regards -- Richard Wade

From your post I think one of the following are likely:
1) your modem is broken
2) your modem cable is broken
3) your phone service is broken
4) you are using something other than the standard System 8.5
software to handle your PPP connection
5) something is interfering with the PPP connection.
The standard PPP script to use for any US Robotics modem is the
US Robotics Universal script. That should work for you.
Find the FAQ for this group at my web site:
http://www.hearsay.demon.co.uk
and see if it gives you new information. If it doesn't, then
post again telling us which US Robotics modem you have and whether
it has a problem connecting to any other phone number.
Simon.
