56k worked and then stopped...

Hi all,

I have been using the Demon beta 56k line for several months without problem,
using a K56Flex no-name modem and Warp3 fixpack35.

A couple of days ago it stopped working... I can connect, and I can
ping news.demon.co.uk for instance, but nothing else works - news doesn't start,
I can't get to any web site, and even finger status@gate doesn't.

All this works if I connect with same modem to the 33k number.

I am using the slipout .cmd, and I have different slip.cfg files with the different
telephone numbers (ie slip.33 has the standard phone number, slip.56 has the
beta number), but other than that all else is the same, I just copy the appropriate
slip file to slip.cfg before dialling.

I have tried resetting the modem to it's default (AT&F0), with no change, and
Demon tell me that 56k should be OK - no other complaints. I have checked that
my resolv2 file has the correct DNS entries -

domain demon.co.uk
nameserver 158.152.1.193
nameserver 158.152.1.65

So now I don't know what can be wrong unless the modem has a fault at high
speed.

Any help would be appreciated.

By the way, I signed up for the Yahoo! Email, and friends berated me for thinking
that the pager applet they use wouldn't work in OS/2, but lo and behold the
Java version of the pager works fine (although it places loads of tasks in
Object Desktop tab launchpad!)

Regards,
Danny

Has anybody noticed some connections not working. That is the exact
same symptoms as outlined above. But only working on approx.
1 out of 5 connections. I've had this problem before, but it went away
without me changing anything. However it's returned over the last
few days.

I'm using the correct name servers. (Both in In-Joy and in resolv!)

Using In-joy (1.40 beta4 (not the problem!!)) with warp4+fp6, on a internal
cardinal modem.

Cheers
Chris

OOPS! - I don't know whether it makes a difference, but I have two RESOLV files
in \tcpip\etc - one is as above with the correct nameservers, the other is RESOLV2
with my posted values (actually I have another two in \mptn\etc, both with the
correct values.) Which resolve file does OS/2 use - resolv or resolv2?

I thought I had updated the file when the announcement was made, but I only updated
the resolv file. Surely I wouldn't get a working connection at 33k either if the DNS
entries were wrong?

As said in my previous not everything is fine at 33k, but not at 56k

Danny

Hi all,

I updated my resolv2 file as well, with no difference.

I don't know if there is a clue in it or not, but although finger status@gate at 33k
is fine, at 56k I get the following:

[status@gate.demon.co.uk]
 error: Unable to receive data:

-Chris, you said that you experienced similar problems as incorrect DNS entries
would produce, but they went and came back - is your 56k access working
at present?

Regards,
Danny

I Love NR/2, but since day one, it has insisted in placing my address twice, even if
I go into advanced and remove it. In Configure/posting it appears twice, even after
correcting it and restarting... Just as well I read more than I post!

On the subject of NR/2...
I appreciate it is a dead product, but does anyone know if it is possible to exclude
articles within newsgroups based on line count? I really don't want to see all the
sub-100 line posts in binary groups.

Regards,
Danny

Well, I'm only using a 33.6 modem, so I don;t know!!

It's a problem that I've had every now and again for a while. I assume
(rightly?) that it's not my setup at fault, as it seems to clear up over
weeks, then reoccurs. However I could be totally wrong!!

BTW, what is the current Demon position regarding 56k modems?

Cheers
Chris
