Simon,
do you get the macintosh "boiinngg" from the speaker when you power
up or do you just hear the hard drive spin up? If you don't hear the boing
then the mac isn't going and as a result the monitor would show black. You
can check if the monitor is really working by winding the brightness up to
maximum. If it is working properly you should see a sort of grey square,
about the the size and shape of the screen you would normally see the
picture on (that is - not touching the sides but having a nice sharp straight
edged border to it). If full brightness produces no grey square your
monitor is culprit. If grey square can be seen then computer is likely
culprit - which is bad luck - monitors are cheaper to replace than CPUs
are to be repaired.
