System 7.5.1 ignoring my INITs

Hello.

I've got a bizarre problem with my system at the moment. I'm
running System 7.5.1 on a PowerBook Duo.

When the machine boots up, only 7 or so of my extensions show
up. At least 20 should show up. When I open up the Extensions
Manager, lots of my extensions and control panels do not appear
in the list. For some reason, lots of them are ignored by the system.

These include ~ATM and PopChar. When I open the ~ATM Control Panel,
the radio button is set to ON, but the message says "ATM is off".
It didn't show up upon startup. Similarly with PopChar, all the settings
are ok, but it just doesn't show up in the menubar.

I've tried various things:

* re-installed the system
* moved all control panels and extensions out of their folders to another
folder, and then dropped them on the closed System Folder.
* rebuilt the desktop
* used Norton Utilities (it detected no problems)
* zapped the PRAM.

I cannot use my machine fully because lots of these Control Panels and
Extensions are being totally ignored. This problem occurred for the first
time this morning. I haven't knowingly changed anything in my system since
yesterday.

Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions about what's wrong with my system,
and what I can do to fix it?

Thanks in advance,

Howell Parry

PS If possible, could you e-mail your reply to me in addition to posting it.
