Q: Netscape 1.1N - 'Unknown encoding..'

I've just installed a VRML helper application for Netscape 1.1N but for a
lot of files I get a message in a dialogue box saying:

'Unknown encoding, x-gzip'

Nothing in the dialogue indicates what application is putting it up, but as
it is before it launches the helper app. I can only assume that it is
Netscape itself.

Netscape then goes on to download the file and launch Whurlwind (the helper
app.), but of course Whurlwind can't make any sense of the file because it
is gzip'ed.

No amount of fiddling with the helper apps./mime types seems to work (i.e.
I can't get Netscape to launch MacGZip).

Help!!!
