Ethernet problem

Does anybody know why, when attempting to switch to Ethernet using the Apple
talk extension (in order to print using an Ethernet crossover cable) I get
the message:

"An error occurred attempting to use Ethernet. Make sure your network
connections are correct"

Well, they are correct, so I have no idea why it doesn't allow me to switch
over. Any suggestions?

Is the printer switched on?

Does the printer obey the rules for a hub or for a normal peripheral
device?

Unless the Mac sees what it believes to be a hub it will not allow the
connection to be switched to ethernet.

I don't know the full technical details of how ethernet works, but in
effect it is equivalent to expecting to see a carrier signal. A hub
always puts out this 'carrier' whereas peripheral devices like computers
with switching capabilities look for it before switching.

It is for this reason that a crossover cable will not always work - and
will usually not work to connect two computers directly together.

Small hubs are not very expensive these days and will ensure much more
reliable connections appart from allowing more devices than just two to
be interconnected.

How about opening up tcp/ip and reconfiguring that for ethernet. It
might not work but well worth a try. Remember/jot down the previous
configurations of the tcp/ip before your re-configuring so you can put
it back to normal if it doesn't work.

Depending on what's on each end of the link, Ethernet crossover
connections sometimes don't work. In this case, go out and buy a cheap
ethernet hub.

...and I can recommend the EN104 4 port 10meg/sec made by, errrmmm...
you know, those nice small ones you get in PC World. 30 quid, work's a
treat, looks nice, small, dark blue, metal etc...

I've got my iBook transferring files to my PC at half a meg a second
through thin air. Brilliant. The PC can also use the modem in my
AirPort base unit at the same time as the iBook, so the two can share a
'net connection. The whole thing works very well...
