I found an old mac in a cupboard at work. It is model IISE. I started it up to see what it could do. However it only gets as far as the smiley mac and shows an image that is presumably a floppy disc with a question mark on it. I guess it is asking to be booted up from a floppy disc - but maybe I'm wrong. There is no sign of any old discs to boot from. Any thoughts or advice as to what to do next to get it going? I later found a Quadra - but I have not had time to try to start it up. PJC

There was an SE - upright box with built-in 9" mono monitor, and a IIsi - large pizza box with separate monitor. It certainly sounds like it needs a system disk. You can download Disk Images of System 7.0.1 or 7.5.3 from the Apple web site, but you'll need a working Mac to copy them to floppy! Perhaps the Quadra has a working system disk. regards, Paul

I was just given a Classic, (smoother version of the SE - same 68000 processor) and the disk was U/S. I put in the disk from my 660AV with MacOS7.5 and it works!!!! Sure beats loading floppies. It doesn't - it's a good idea to install Sys 7.5.whatever from scratch
using an installation for that particular Mac model. There's a good
chance you're missing some resources that an SE needs (but a 660AV
doesn't), and have some resources available that a 660AV needs and an SE
doesn't.

It sounds like you're missing a boot disc. Now then... A IISE doesn't
exist - if it's an SE, you've probably not got an internal HDD and
you'll need to create a boot floppy to get it to start up. System 6.0.8
is probably best for this - have a look at Apple's Web site to download
the disc images. You'll need 4 DS DD discs with absolutely nothing on
them (freshly formatted) and Disk Copy 4.2 (for preference) to put the
disc images on discs. Once you've done that, don't put any of them into
a modern Mac unlocked - if you do that, they won't be able to boot your
old Mac.
If you've got a Mac IIs<something>, you should have an internal HDD. It
might be that this is broken, or that it doesn't have a working System
Folder on it. You might try using the System 6.0.8 in this case: boot
the Mac and see if a HDD appears on the desktop. If not, try the Disk
Tools disc and see if you can reformat the HDD using HD SC Setup. If
you can't, it's probably knackered :-/
If you've got plenty of RAM (at least 4MB) and a HDD, you might try
getting System 7.5.3 from Apple's Web site. It might be a bit sluggish
if the Mac you have is an SE, but it'll run a lot more software than
System 6.0.8.

Thanks to PD, GB, RM and Marion P for their comments. I'll take better note of the model number next time . It is a pizza box model with a choice of several abandoned screens. I will try the Quadra first before trying the various suggestions for the IIsi. I already have 3 working macs at home so I am not desperate - but it would be nice to have a mac at this temporary office as well as the wintel machine I have been allocated. Thanks for alerting me to the need for older system software. PJC >Paul Connolly <pconnoll@bigpond.net.au> wrote: > >> I found an old mac in a cupboard at work. >> It is model IISE.

A IIsi will run up to System 7.6.1 quite happily; it's just not freely
available. System 6.0.8 is much smaller than any System 7, so it's a
good one to start off by downloading to see if you can get the thing
working.
