Try using the red romp 0845 079 8666
this is the one I use with my Diamond SE
I had tried the green romp in the early days and used to get a green
connection :)
I believe it is much better for ppl with 3com equipment (i.e USR modems,
x2 type modems) as it has 3com equipment at demons end, were as the red
romp uses Ascend equipment

I may be wrong about the tech. details (pls inform me If I am), but It
will do no harm to try 0845 079 8666 (just remember that if you do
continue to use it, change your friends and family details :)

It may also be useful to finger status@gate.demon.co.uk and see if demon
have reported and problems during the time you were connected

if problem still persist disconnect all phones when you are connecting
to the net (I used to get a real bad connection which was due to a cheap
phone on an extension)
