From out of nowhere, Jimi's cousin <Frank@acclaim.demon.co.uk> gave
these words to the world...
>
>Does anyone have a list of (currently sold) flash upgradeable modems?
>I'm having difficulty with suppliers when I try to find this information
>out (some don't even know what flash rom is!).
>
>I'm, aware that the Hayes Optima and USR Courier are so equipped, but
>what about others? In particular, I am getting conflicting stories about
>the new USR Sportsters. I thought they didn't have flash rom, but some
>suppliers are telling me they do. Since I sometimes wonder if suppliers
>know what they're talking about, maybe someone here can help me out.

As I understand it, the US versions of the older USR 288 and 144 Fax
Modems had a replaceable chip, which you could change to get upgrades,
but the UK versions did not. The 288 Voice is flash-upgradeable to 336.
The 336 Voice (at least, the UK version), will require a chip
replacement to upgrade it to 56k download, which would seem to tie-up
with the badly-inserted bios chip fitted to mine. Other upgrades, like
running fixes, I do not know about, I'm afraid.

I'm probably wrong about this, but that's the way I see things.
