I d/l:ed the programs you mentioned but when I try to join the demon
quake server (double clicking on it in the list in QuakeSpy) QuakeWorld
pops up and starts to run. When it gets to the bit of actualy
connecting to the server it says:

Connecting to xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx (can't remember the IP)
Server is version 2.21 (or something)

Then it just repeats all over again so I get a screen-full of these
messages.

Do I need to d/l:ed a map or a patch or something?
