A single-ended bus has a ground return for each signal A differential bus
uses a differential pair of wires for each signal. For a "0" state one of the
wires is high voltage and the other is low, for a "1" they swap around.
The receiver uses the voltage difference between them to determine the signal
state. This gives twice the relative voltage swing between states hence
higher noise immunity. External interference will tend to affect both
wires similarly and cancel out once the difference is taken. Fields generated
by the two wires will also tend to cancel.

That sounds like you are getting confused with active terminators.
