CD Rom Drive Problem

God this has taken hours....

I just installed a GoldStar 4x (GCD-R540C) CD Rom drive and a SoundBlaster 16
Value into my 486DX 33MHz pc. Other info: 8Mb RAM, 128Kb CPU Cache, 210 Mb IDE
Hard Disk.

Sound card works OK. First problem was getting the CD drive recognised.
Eventually realised you had so change the IDE port setting on the sound card
from tertiary (default factory setting), to secondary, and change the IRQ line
to 15. CD Rom set as Master. Aha! Can now see CD drive, DIR command pulls up
lots of files and directories. OK to screw the lid back on...

I can do a DIR on the CD Rom drive ("E:" on my system), copy files from it, but
not run anything. I can even play *.WAVs from the CD through Windows, and
audio CDs work fine.

But from DOS, system just hangs when you try to run an *.EXE file from the CD.
In Windows, a variety of errors occurs when you try to run a program from the
CD, inc lack of memory, GPFs, etc. These happen when trying to run the
setup.exe from MS Office CD or Corel Draw CD, for example.

I did see once that the DIR command gave an incorrect file listing for the CD
Rom directory. Funny...

Maybe a DMA conflict? I tried removing the only other card in there (network
card, I think DMA=0 anyway), no joy. Otherwise only a video card and the disk
I/O card.

Here are my autoexec and config:

I've tried booting with EMS expanded memory, no good.

Is the CD Rom too fast.....?

Any suggestions most gratefully received.
TIA
Peter
