This is where the second number on the smartdrv command line comes in. ie., if you load smartdrv as:- SMARTDRV 2048 128 Smartdrv will load, and use 2048k during DOS operations, but will turn itself 'down', and use 128k when running Windows. Smartdrive, is capable of cacheing CD's, but vcache is not (older versions of smartdrive do not support this). Hence, install smartdrive, _after_ mscdex, and use a command line setting as much, or as little memory as you want to cache the CD etc.. If memory is very short, and you do not have a CD, then do not use smartdrive at all. Makes booting a little slower, but will help RAM availability in windows. If you load smartdrive without any numbers after it, it will automatically, use a lower amount of memory in Windows, but the amount will change according to the size of your memory, do 'HELP SMARTDRV', to see how much it will allocate. If you want to be really 'flashy', you can load windows with a batch file, that turns smartdrive 'off', for all the HD's, but leaves it 'on', for CD's, and removeable media drives if you have any, and then turns it back on afterwards.
